W-L ALFALFAS FOCUS 2015 LATE SEPTEMBER
WRAPPING UP THE 2015 ALFALFA PLANTING SEASON
Alfalfa seeding is winding down in most parts of the Plains States. If you missed the optimum time to plant, consideration should be given to spring planting, as late seeding is always a rushed procedure and shortcuts taken almost always have a negative impact on stand establishment. The investment of seeding alfalfa is high and demands a focus on doing it right. If you are in an area that can successfully seed in October, it is important that seeding occur as soon as possible. Each day that passes increases the slowing down of seedling growth due to shorter sunlight period and cooler nighttime temperatures. Remember that the goal is a successful stand, not just getting the seed in the ground. Getting it right the first time always pays dividends!
PLANNING FOR A SUCCESSFUL 2016 ALFALFA CROP
With investment and economy often as focal points in our decision making process, it’s important to focus on the essentials that are needed to successfully harvest highest potential yields of alfalfa hay. Here are some focus points:
SPRING SEEDING ALFALFA:
Soil test and apply recommended fertility, making sure there are no carryover pesticides.
Establish a cover crop on erodible soils – 30-35 lbs. oats, 25-30 lbs. wheat or rye before planting.
Select the best W-L Alfalfas variety ideally suited to your soil type, weed mgmt. and production needs.
Soil test and apply recommended fertility to meet yield and soil maintenance goals.
Apply dormant season weed control products targeted toward known weed pressure.
Closely monitor early and mid-season insect pressure and use control measures as needed.
Monitor weed pests during growing season and use effective control measures sooner rather than later.
