USING ROUNDUP READY® ALFALFA IN RESISTANT WEED APPLICATIONS
We are fielding a lot of questions as to the benefit of the Roundup Ready® technology when there is increasing pressure from glyphosate-resistant weeds. Don’t let the added pressure of resistant weeds be the only or even the leading factor in determining the need for Roundup Ready® Alfalfa. Even in resistant weed areas, a large percentage of weeds will still be controlled by recommended glyphosate applications, without crop injury, and at any growth stage up until 5 days before harvest! There is also the option of some tank mix applications (check with your local crop management representative), and separate chemistry treatments to assist in combating resistant weeds. We are at a point in all crop production that we must be diligent in the effective control of weeds whether resistant or not. Roundup Ready® weed management systems are still the most versatile and effective tools to use in weed-free alfalfa production. Glyphosate alone is not a complete problem solver, but having it as an option is an important tool in alfalfa management. Roundup Ready® Alfalfa – an important and useful technology.
ALFALFA SEED COST – A BARGAIN FOR YOUR PRODUCTION ACRE!
Growers are well aware of the significant up front cost of alfalfa seed being used in new planted acres. And as usual, a normal part of the decision making process is: How can I get my seed costs down? Should I eliminate the use of technology and the fee associated with it? Should I revert to old public varieties that are “cheap” or go clear to the bottom and accept a “VNS” seed? Amortized over a 5-year period, annual seed costs for different crops show a distinct value in value-added alfalfa seed. Seed cost for alfalfa is approximately 40% of the cost of seed corn when amortized over 5 years and using all of the current technologies available in both crops. Now that’s a bargain! “Cheap” is the most expensive route to go because of reduced yields, higher weed management costs, and low persistence!
